I love fall.

This is the time of year when I am certain I can reinvent myself, just by having the right supplies and one or two new outfits. This surely stems from the glory days of youth when all you needed was a protractor and compass, some lined paper and #2 pencils to be well prepared for the year ahead.

That was when I packed up my supplies and headed back to school, already sweating because I couldn’t wait to wear my new cable knit sweater from Foxmoor Casuals at the mall; my feet killing me in my stiff, new saddle shoes. But when I sauntered into homeroom, I expected that my new clothes and well-organized school supplies would send a signal to classmates and teachers alike that I had changed; that the summer had matured me and I was now organized, accountable and disciplined, not to mention, incredibly stylish and good looking.

So now, a hundred years later, it is a really big challenge to find the right supplies and outfits because I am now trying to convey two conflicting things: that I am mature and disciplined and accountable AND I am not aging, not one bit.

While I have become a fan of expensive freeze-the-skin-on-your-face beauty products, in my heart I know that my best back-to-school plan is simple: take care of my body by moving it intentionally and thoughtfully and feeding myself with things that serve me; things like good food, kind friends, family and community service. I have all the supplies I need and, as much as it pains me to admit it, all the clothes I need too.

I hope that as you consider your own reinvention this autumn, you will remember that your best self lives inside of you. Your best self can’t be bought at the mall but it can be coaxed out with regular movement and breath and a few good health habits.

And after that? Okay, we can still shop.

Thanks too to Bridget and Karen from Shine Yoga for providing yoga classes at Pendleton to Cirque.

We love people who work hard and then work even harder to stay healthy! That’s why we love Leah, Matt and the entire staff of High Street. Not only are they about to open the most amazing furniture/gift/design store in the region, they are coming to Pendleton as a staff one a week to work out some of the stress in a private Reformer class. And the even better news for us? Their store is right up the street from our downtown studio, across from Staples at 1401 Reading Road. Opens end of September . . . We also love feisty, interesting art makers, especially when they are in our neighborhood. Check out Know Theatre Tribe on Jackson Street this season. Visit www.knowtheatre.com . . . Finally, we love Vinyl, also in Over-the-Rhine. For great food, lovely service and a very happening scene, check out Vinyl at 1212 Sycamore.
