PENDLETON PILATES NEWS - January 27, 2005

From Stacy Sims

Since the last time I wrote this newsletter in mid-December, more than 200,000 people were killed by the tsunami in Asia and India. Scores more die every day of AIDS in Africa. And then last week, in our own small client community, we lost a vibrant young woman in the blink of an eye.

It was obvious last Tuesday evening at the visiting hours for Coleen Tracey what a tremendous impact Coleen had on people. Hundreds gathered to pay their respects to the family and friends of this inspiring and vivacious young woman (read more about Coleen at http://www.wguc.org/coleen/).

At these moments -- when we are faced with the harsh reality and pain of loss -- we also come face to face with ourselves. And perhaps, only then, do we begin to ask the questions that really matter. Are we living fully today? What do we do to make a difference in other people's lives? Is it enough?

That's why it was so fulfilling to be able to donate shoes to the tsunami victims. Thanks to Fleet Feet and instructor Kate Hoge's organization and pick-up efforts, Fleet Feet was able to gather more than 4,000 pairs of shoes to send to Asia and India.

And that's why it feels so good to be donating to First Step Home at the end of the month. Please bring us your home goods and personal care items so we can make a difference to these hard-working women and children. We will also be making a special donation to First Step Home in Coleen Tracey's name.

But is this enough? It is enough for today. Tomorrow, we will give again and over time, it will be enough to make a difference.

And is it selfish to take good care of ourselves when there is so much suffering in the world? Absolutely not. If we stay strong and centered, we will more often than not do the next right thing. Complacency breeds complacency. Mindful, purposeful action breeds mindful, purposeful action. I am honored to be a part of this growing community of active and giving men and women.

Don't Forget To Take The First Step!

Let your first step toward a better body help someone else take their first step toward a better life. Pendleton Pilates is donating 5% of new client fees received in January to First Step Home. First Step Home ( www.firststephome.org) is a non-profit, long-term residential treatment for women recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. The residence also houses the women's children during their recovery so they can build healthy lives and new parenting skills with their family intact.

Please make a donation in January by bringing any of the following items to the studios: diapers (newborn and up), personal supplies (toothpaste, lotion, gloves, hats, scarves), items to begin housekeeping after the women successfully complete the program (dishes, bed linens, pots and pans, cleaning supplies).

Listen to the Wiz and the Buzz and Win Free Classes!

Pendleton Pilates has partnered with local radio stations to help listeners get fit in 2005.  The BUZZ (WDBZ 1230 AM) and The WIZ (WIZF 100.9 FM) are asking the "Pendleton Pilates Healthy Trivia" question each day.  You can log onto our website www.pendletonpilates.com to find the answers.  The 9th caller with the correct answer wins.  Tune in and you could receive an Initial Consultation Series, Single Mat Classes, Mat Class Packages, our famous "Look Better Naked" t-shirts, and more.  Plus, if you listen carefully, you'll hear our client, Terri Thomas, in her more notable role as midday diva on the Wiz!

Sarah, Shannon, Stacy and Melissa have a pair - do you? Client Ann Firestone made Sarah a pair of these "stupid" pants a month ago and the Pance Craze began. Check out the selection of these comfortable, stylish wrap pants at each of the studios. And if you want something you don't see, we have Ann's contact information so you can specify a custom "Pance."
