From Stacy Sims

This is an important time of the year for me. On December 29th, I will celebrate seven glorious years of sobriety.

And if I think back to seven years ago, I can see myself so clearly it hurts. I was a daily drinker. I smoked over a pack of cigarettes a day. I took serious amounts of anti-anxiety medication just to leave the house. Not surprisingly, I was a spiritless, broken person.

With every betrayal of my body, it tried to tell me to stop. But I wasn't listening. I didn't listen to what the panic attacks were telling me. I didn't listen to what the weight gain was telling me. I was disconnected from my body so I was disconnected from grace and hope.

I started in a 12-step program right before the New Year and began taking Pilates a few weeks later. And so I began my wonderful journey back into my body.

It is with great joy that I watch all of you kick off 2005 with a bit of the medicine that healed me - the powerful Pilates medicine. And it is with great joy that Lou Buschle, Pendleton Pilates co-owner, and I will again donate 5% of fees from our new clients during the month of January to First Step Home - a residential treatment program for women recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. Our current clients can help too. Please read below and see what items you might bring to the studio in January to donate to First Step Home.

We are also committed to helping you take care yourself so that you can better serve your family, your community, and your causes. So we are continuing our popular Stay Centered For the Holidays promotion into the New Year - read more below!

Finally, please don't hesitate to ask us for a donation to your favorite charity. We try to honor all of our client's requests and have provided gift certificates for services to Summit Country Day, MayFest, Make a Wish Foundation and many more worthy causes this past year.

I hope you have the happiest of holidays. And before you make that huge list of New Years Resolutions - that inventory of all that you have not yet done - take time to celebrate your accomplishments and your gifts. They are many. That's why it feels so good to be at the studios! We all benefit from the grace and the good intentions of each other.

Thank you for your support!

Stacy Sims

p.s. I neglected to thank a very important teacher in the last newsletter. Thanks to Sheila Sims - my mom. I figure the only saving grace to forgetting to thank your mom is the ability to single her out at a later date!

p.s.s. Welcome back Kate Hoge! We are thrilled to have Kate back with us after her recovery from a bicycle accident and subsequent surgery. You have been missed.

p.s.s.s. Save the date! Swimming Naked comes out in paperback in February and Joseph Beth Booksellers in Rookwood has invited me back to do a reading and signing on Wednesday, March 9th at 7:00 pm.

Take The First Step

Let your first step toward a better body help someone else take their first step toward a better life. Pendleton Pilates is donating 5% of new client fees received in January to First Step Home. First Step Home (www.firststephome.org) is a non-profit, long-term residential treatment for women recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. The residence also houses the women's children during their recovery so they can build healthy lives and new parenting skills with their family intact.

Please make a donation in January by bringing any of the following items to the studios: diapers (newborn and up), personal supplies (toothpaste, lotion, gloves, hats, scarves), items to begin housekeeping after the women successfully complete the program (dishes, bed linens, pots and pans, cleaning supplies).

Staying Centered in the New Year = More Free Classes in 2005!

Our holiday promotion was so successful we are continuing it during January and February!

Starting January 3rd, if you maintain an average of three classes a week until February 25th (that's 24 classes total), we'll give you six (6) free classes with the purchase of your next package in 2005. If you maintain an average of two classes a week until the end of the year (that's 16 total), we'll give you four (4) free sessions with the purchase of your next package in 2005. If you maintain an average of one class a week (8 classes), we'll give you two (2) free sessions with your next 2005 package.

Again, the only catch is that you need to let Shannon know by December 30th if you will be participating in our STAY CENTERED FOR NEW YEAR promotion so she can track your sessions separately from our standard system. Call Shannon at 513-478-3232 to get started.

All I knew about Pilates was what I saw on the infomercials that Mari Winsor has. I said "there is NO way I can do that" (balancing self on tailbone, legs at 45 degree angle and arms in front, neck in C -curve. My friend said, "I don't think that's what Pilates really is." He mentioned Pendleton several times to me, over the course of the summer. When I met Stacy in September, and she introduced me to breathing/stretching/spine lengthening exercises, I thought "well, if this is Pilates , I can do it." I called the following Monday and was participating in my first lesson by that Wednesday.

Looking back, if I had known what the teachers were going to have me do, I would have said "NO WAY." Yet, I would return each time, knowing (inspite of aching muscles and soaked teeshirts and headbands, how good this felt for my big body.Sarah and I both agreed, I needed more lessons on the reformer.

One thing led to another. I really like my teachers, I really like the way I have been feeling and looking. People are noticing the changes (more open chest, longer spine). At 15 sessions, several colleagues noticed the differences through my middle (I liken it to 10 pounds of flour in a 5 pound sack theory-or how to redistribute your weight.) My weight is a big issue. I have calmed down considerably about food. With more mindful eating, increased activity (I also go to Curves, and swim laps) , I have managed to lose 15 pounds since September. I committed to being weighed and measured at Curves before 2004 is over (I have been a bit shy of such activities since a large weight gain from May-September). I committed to 10 more privates which I will space over December. I look forward to reporting again after I reach 30 sessions!

After a year's worth of procrastination (and some weight gain), I finally signed up for the 10 mat classes, as I promised you I would last winter...  had my first one last night (with Kate, who was wonderful), and the immediate result has been so good that I am actually excited about getting to my next class.  Today I feel more relaxed and limber than I have in some time, and that has improved my outlook as well.

We Are Getting Busy!

Please make sure to let us know 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel a session with us. Our classes are filling up and those Reformer spots are becoming an increasingly valuable commodity. And we know that you certainly don't enjoy paying for a class that you were unable to attend.

Finally ... A Code

This is a long newsletter! Thanks for reading all the way to the end. Please remember to ask your instructor or Shannon for the code to the Downtown Studio door. Starting this Friday, December 17th, you will need the code to enter the studio.
